Airbag Defect Recalls

RECALLS RELATED TO AIRBAGS AFFECT OVER 10 MILLION CARS

THE LAW OFFICES OF THOMAS P. WILLINGHAM, P.C. HAVE SUCCESSFULLY HANDLED AIRBAG DEFECT CASES SIMILAR TO THE CURRENT RECALL

As recently as this week, Takata announced a massive recall of defective airbags on more than 3 million vehicles. The potentially dangerous airbags were installed as original equipment in the following cars:

  • Toyota - 2001-2003 Corolla, Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia and Lexus SC 430
  • Mazda - 2003-2004 Mazda 6 and 2004 RX8
  • Nissan - 2001-2003 Maxima, Infiniti FX, Infiniti QX4, Pathfinder and Sentra
  • Honda - 2002-2003 CR-V, 2001-2003 Civic and the 2002 Odyssey
  • General Motors - 2003 Pontiac Vibe

All vehicles involved in the recall require inspection to confirm that a defective airbag was installed. If your airbag is defective it should be replaced immediately.

According to the recall the inflators in certain airbags manufactured and supplied to various vehicle manufacturers by Takata may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflators to rupture upon deployment, shooting shards of metal into the vehicle striking and potentially seriously injuring occupants of the car.

Last week Takata said that it had improperly stored chemicals and had mishandled the manufacture of explosive propellants used in the airbags at its plant in Mexico. Takata also failed to keep adequate records making it difficult to identify vehicles with the potentially dangerous and defective airbags.

According to the new NHTSA investigation into the exploding Takata airbags opened on June 11, 2014, all incidents have occurred in a high absolute humidity climate. The most recent incidents being reported by NHTSA include the 2005 Honda Civic, 2003 toyota Corrolla, 2004 Nissan Sentra, 2006 Dodge Charger and the 2002 Toyota Corolla.
